i have had the same problem
i have had the same problem i just got windows vista yesterday i got premium edition with it so i installed and it said "please enter product key" i enterd it and it let me onto the next bit.
later that day i noticed that the sound wasnt working saying "no audio output device is installed". In device manager it is showing 2 sound drivers but still i hear no sound. If anyone knows how i can get my sound working give me an e-mail my address is jlsofit@hotmail.co.uk
Also it is saying "the product key you enterd is invalid" i went into "my computer" and you can re enter the product key i have done this several times making sure that i didnt type in the wrong code but its still giving me the message "the product key you enterd is invalid".

Right i have managed to
Right i have managed to solve the problem for the meantime i havnt shutdown my computer since rectifing the problem.
this is what i did step by step to get my sound working:
1.click the windows icon.
2.right click my computer and click properties.
3.A window will appear giving you information about your computer. In the top left of the screen under the word "task" click device manager.
4.Click the "+" next to "sound, video and game controllers" in my case i had two drives for sound these were: Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II (26xxx) and SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.
what you now need to do is right click sigmatel and click uninstall.
5.you now need to re-install the programme to do this go to programme files this is located in the (c:) drive look for the sigmatel folder.
6.once you have found the folder open it and the installation is "setup". Click the link below for a picture

i've had partially similar
i've had partially similar problem with Realtek ALC660 audio chip on an ECS GeForce6100SM-M (nvidia mcp61s, nForce 405 chipset) motherboard. i've tried in many way but failed to fix the problem. Then our local tech support guy from Atikotek was able to solve it. he downloaded Realtek wdm_r166.zip 25MB driver file, scanned with anti-virus soft, rebooted pc in safe mode, uninstalled previous realtek drivers from "Add/Remove Programs", opened device manager, disabled the "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" sound controller device, then disabled the "MS UAA Bus Driver For HD Audio" system device. then probably rebooted back to safe mode, and then unistalled those device, i can't remember now. anyway, then he reinstalled rtk driver in safe mode and restarted pc, and audio working ! i paid him happily and have my receipt. now it appears as "Realtek High Definition Audio" :) hope this info give you ideas/pointers.

I fixed mine. Go to Control
I fixed mine.
Go to Control Panel
Open Device Manager
Go down to "Sound, video and game controllers"
I had the "Conexant High Defintion SmartAudio HD2" option
I clicked on that
It said that it was disabled
I enabled it
And my sound was back to normal

Conexant audio driver after vista upgrade
After spending about 6 hours trawling the internt for solution to the HP / Conexant issue with Vista i fell upon my sution by installing the following driver. Somewhat out of date but it works on my HP510 with 32 bit Vista upgraded from XP Pro. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp...
