hellow guys...1st time here...i have vista home premium and im just wondering why is there no video on my vlc player when i play mp4 or mkv files...any suggestion??? and last thing...is there any codec that i can download to play mp4 and mkv files to media center?

I am a newbie to the forum and I just bought from Dell a new E520 Dimension with the following:

Celeron D processor 336
2.8 ghz, 533 FSB
2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 533 mhz
250GB SATA II drive
Windows Vista Home Premium
16x DVD-Rom drive
56K PCI Modem
Integrated audio and video
No floppy drive

I have added to it:

200GB SATA drive
Radeon X300 256mb Graphics Card, PCI Express (needed this for multiple monitor display)
Wireless PCI Network Card

As I started it up for the first time and it connected to the internet it told me that there was a bios update for it from Dell and advised me to update it b4 I did anything else, which I did to the letter of the instructions I was given. Soon thereafter I hooked up an external hard drive via a USB port so I could copy over my music files to the OS drive. About 5% into that operation the pc gives me a blank blue screen and then automatically reboots itself. It goes thru the whole "would you like to Windows to find the cause for this" thing but never really shows me what that was. I tried to start the copy process again and it happens again and again. Having run all the hardware diagnostics and everything passed with flying colors I still have the same problem. I then took a known good SATA drive and connected it internally and tried again. This time at about 5% of the process it just locked up the pc hard but did not blue screen. Having no other choice but to turn the pc off I started it in safe mode and only then was I able to copy all my files over without a hitch. Since then I pulled that drive out and ran all the other hardware tests again just to be sure.
