Anna Nicole Smith, the Houston-born pop culture phenomenon who raised bubble-headed fame to an art form, died Thursday after collapsing in a Florida hotel room. She was 39.

Anna Nicole was someone who dared to live wildly outside the box. She escaped her roots, refused to settle for less than she was, and became a dazzling star (albeit with beauty as her talent) because she knew she was a star. That is why I am saddened by her death.

For years, Anna Nicole Smith lived with constant comparisons to Marilyn Monroe, and now it's likely in death she'll have just as much of the same. But did she really even come close to attaining the kind of Hollywood glory and pop icon status that Monroe did during her 36-year life that ended in 1962?
