Hey guys,

I have

3ghz intel pentium 4
2gb of ram
ati radeon x1600

and i want to know why my start menu is so slow. When i click start and then all programs thats fine it does it instantly. Then when i click any program in the list it takes it time. It takes at least 10 seconds to show whats in it. Its the same whether i go into accessories or whether i click mozilla firefox.

Any ideas why? This is really irritating!

For some reason, when I click the Start Menu and then before I click on "all programs" (most used program list), I click on a program and it doesn't open. Ever.

For example: I click on - Windows Live Messenger but it just doesn't load. It clicks, but it doesn't load. Nor does it appear to open any sort of process.

Same with iTunes, but yet programs such as Nero Vision work.

I can open Itunes and Windows live messenger by clicking on an icon that opens a song in itunes, or through the all programs tab.

Anybody have a clue why this is happening? Any fixes?

in older comupters.after IBM punch cards, in the 70s go,run, were commands to initiate a program .the start menu contains all programs even to start the stop program

I found something interesting out, I don't know if its been posted already or not. But anyway, I've had a few programs that just randomly don't run sometimes. Soon as I click on the shortcut Windows just outright says "This program is not responding and needs to close" This happened to me on Itunes and a couple others. All one has to do is right click My Computer ---> Advanced System Settings --->Advanced tab ---> Click on Settings in the Performance section, then finally the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) tab.

As you can read, DEP is meant to block programs except for Microsoft certified ones from using 'sensitive memory' space and addresses. If you have a program that you cannot start, choose "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for the ones I select" and add the program .exe that you're trying to start. This solved my problem.

cheers for inquiring, when i start me pc it opens a window now to inform me that 'start up programmes were blocked' it say click to view programmes but if i do by computer wont let me do anything? it doesn't freeze it just thinks forever and wont allow me open anything else, i cant even shut it down or restart it without holding the on button down? its really anoying me now so some assistence would be apreciated.

also, it keeps telling me that side bar failed to open but i've switched it off? reason being that its totally unnessesary and gives me nothing i need to have on my desktop, why does vista have a side bar? its lame! or am i not using it right?
