I'm having a problem with the sleep functionality. When Vista puts my machine to sleep, I don't believe it actually accomplishes actual "sleep". All of my USB devices are disabled and the display is turned off, but the fans (CPU and case) are still running and neither my power button nor my reset button have any affect on waking the machine.

The only solution I've found is to hold down the power button for ~5 secs to force a power-down. When I turn the power back on, I get a loading screen that says "Resuming Windows" (or something similar), then I get a long black screen with a few flickers and a lot of hard drive thrashing. After ~2 mins of the flickering black screen, Vista tries to put the machine back to sleep. This is about 50% successful. Half of the time the machine actually achieves sleep, my green power LED blinks, and the machine returns to normal use after I press the power button. The other half of the time, I get put back into the "almost-sleep" state and I have to force a power-down again.

Another question if anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.....

For some reason, if I leave my laptop on for some time and come back to it. I will open up the lid and the screen will be black. When the screen finally comes to, I get the user sign in screen where I am to type my password... no biggie right? of course not. But whenever I try to type, nothing happens. It is like my computer is frozen. I have to then manually turn off my computer and turn it back on. When I turn it on, I get a blue screen saying there was an error. It suggest drivers to be updated but all of my drivers are up to date. Is there any way of fixing this inconvienance? Thank you.

I got a new HP desktop yesterday with Vista Home Premium installed. I'm having three interrelated problems with power management:

1. Power management settings are set to turn off the monitor after 30 minutes. It does not turn off at the designated time. It stays on all the time. The monitor is less than 2 years old and always turned off on schedule with my old computer.

2. Power management settings are set to put the computer to sleep after 45 minutes. It does not do so.

3. When I try to put the computer to sleep manually, it wakes up again after only about 30 seconds, every time. I turned off the mouse's ability to awaken the computer, lest vibration be the cause of premature awakening, but it didn't make any difference.

I've set my motherboard's setting to auto between S1 or S3, even if I select S3 manually, I do not get the hibernate option, nor do see it in the advanced power settings. Secondly, Vista does not go to sleep, the screen go black then comes back on...

when i press the power button my screen goes blank then reappears about 5 seconds later. I want this button to be able to turn my system off completely. I have gone into power options and defined the power button to shut down but it does not happen.

Any ideas what i'm doing wrong ?
