I want to get yahoo mail notifications without installing the yahoo toolbard in windows vista - what are my options (rss?/other)

i have windows vista, and i always used yahoo internet based mail online. i always saw in past versions of windows of outlook express which i always ignored. now i have windows mail, which replaces it so i want to give it a try. thing is, i don't know how to set it up. how to set up an email account or anything. i tried to make a hotmail account, but it said it wouldn't let me. what do i do?

is there a gadget to show messages for yahoo mail? I've seen ones for outlook, just wondering k thx
