Hey I'm using vista home premium 32bit and I have a strange bug happening to me. I use plantronics dsp 500 usb headset and for some reason it will mute the microphone by itself. It seems to happen when I open counter-strike. Is anyone having a problem where vista randomly mutes your mic? It's troublesome to me because I often use Ventrilo to chat and it's annoying when it gets muted and I don't realize it.

Vista and Plantronics DSP500
Hi,
I am actually trying to configure Plantronics DSP500 with my Vista home premium laptop but it is not working. Can you please tell me the steps required to configure it? Do I need to get any drivers for this..if yes then which driver and from where can I get that?
Thank you in advance
Same Issue
I am using a Plantronics GameCom Pro 1... just installed Vista Home Premium last week and noticed that the mute indicator kept lighting up red.
I've yet to find any settings inside Vista that might cause this... just googled "vista mutes usb mic" and found this entry. Was hoping to find an answer :(
mic mutes in vista
I have the same problem using TF2. As soon as a new map loads or the game loads up for the first time or I connect to a new server the mic button goes res (mute). I can unmute it but its still annoying. I dont have any drivers with this headset and there arent any. This is a Vista issue apparently.

Solution
This is a bit late in coming, but I did find a solution. Whenever Vista installed the driver for the headset it muted it by default. So instead of hitting the mute button on the headset to unmute it you have to go in to the manage audio devices area and unmute it. Otherwise you end up fighting with the OS because you hitting the mute button on the headset doesn't undo the mute in the OS.
Possible Fix
I believe I found a fix for this. Since I couldn't find it anywhere else, I figured I would post what I found as a comment here in hopes that others having the same problem could find a solution quicker. Good luck!
1. Click the Start button > Control Panel
2. Open the "Hardware and Sound" panel
3. Under the "Sound" heading click "Manage audio devices"
4. Click the "Recording" tab
5. Find the headset you are having problems with and right click on it, click "Properties"
6. Click the "Levels" tab
7. Click the speaker button on the right to make sure mute is off
This worked for me!
yep that was exactly what i
yep that was exactly what i did.. what a relief..
sometimes you just have to explore =)
muting
okay, i can find the unmute/mute button on my computer, but my girlfriends computer just has a "Balance" button next to it
Try disabling other recording devices
After upgrading Vista 32bit with service pack 1, my USB mic stopped working (tho my headset continued to play sound).
I tried disabling the other recording devices (similar to the suggestion above) and my mic began working again.
Try Control Panel Home > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage audio devices > Recording. In this panel disable the Microphone, Aux, Line In, Stereo Mix, and anything else (if you want to use those plugs again, you will probably need to re-enable them)!
dear sir, and friends
i am also facing this same problem, in my new laptop with XP professional. i dont know how to fix it,,,
when record any sound, using sounder recorder, no problem, but when i use it to call in yahoo or hotfoon, or else, hotmail or gmail. kalas, the microphone mutes itself, even if i unmute and increase the volume,
it is automatically reducing its volume,, this happens only when i am calling,
as soon as i cut d call, the microphone becomes normal, with unmuted and high volume,, y it is like that, please tell me the solution
