Mercedes-Benz has made it official. They will be opening their virtual showroom and test track in Second Life on Februrary 20th in the "upmarket South West district." They will hold an opening celebration featuring a concert with artists from the Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape compilation. A visit to the sim will garner you a free Formula 1 racing suit and helmet (virtual, of course). To mark the celebration you may download the music compilation now at www.mercedes-benz.com/mixedtape.
Mercedes will have a dedicated avatar to answer questions about current specials or Mercedes vehicles, however the "avatar" seems it will be available by IM and email rather than in the pixelflesh, according to the accompanying blog - although the official press says the avatar will be available during "peak hours." The blog teases the features of MB's SL presence and provides a little background. It also provides information as to what Second Life is for the uninitiated, instructions on getting an account and answers some very basic questions.
A big screen video display will play promotional and informationalvideos as well as videos of events that happen on the island for"on-demand" replay.
Mercedes has been operating in "stealth mode" for several months building their sim. They are located on Mercedes Benz Island, however the 10 sim region is not yet open.
There is a dedicated press desk with a digital press kit that includespress releases, images and background information.During the earlyphase of the launch Mercedes will have a special press avatar availablefrom 2-3 p.m. CET.
