Do you own a HP? It is a piece of Cr#p. The TSSTCorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L is junk. They need to release new firmware to fix the problem. Don't know how long it is going to take them to release the new firmware. Never buy another HP product. They suck.
This will help
The same thing happened too me. I bought a computer from pc world with the drive and it did not work (with dvd's). I rang up The tech Guyz because I was still under warranty with hp, and they sent an engineer with the part for free. I hope this helps!

i have a tsstcorp cd|dvdw ts-h653l drive and it wont recognize any dvd media. i use windows XP.
There is a firmware upgrade on the HP site but it doesn't work. Not only does it look cheap and flaw full but it stays stuck on 'installation in progress' for hours and never installs anything. I knew HP laptops sucked, well now I know HP desktops suck as well...
Fix for tsstcorp cd/dvdw ts-h653l ata not working with hp machin
To fix this issue I downloaded the firmware for this device from the HP site but I'm not sure how much affect it really had. Ultimately what I ended up doing was going to the registry and went to the following key: hkey local machine, system, currentcontrolset, control, class and found this key: 4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318. I then deleted any string in that key that started with Lower or Upper.
happens on dells too
i have the TS-H653B and also have this problem, i have a DELL Inspiron 530, DELL told me to try deleting the upper and lower strings in that same registry entry it had no effect, neither did reinstalling the firmware driver from support.euro.dell.com, nor did using the diagnostics software in my pc's utility partition.
DELL today recommended uninstalling the driver and rebooting but that failed so now they remaining suggestion is they will send me a replacement of this drive, but if this such a wide spread problem surely this will just happen again right.
