What is good health and what is proper nutrition? What does the average person need to be in good health? Good health comes from proper nutrition in the correct levels our bodies need.
Good health is only possible if you have good nutrition. There are four basic things that all animals need to stay in good health. Those four things are water, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. If you know why your body needs these things, and how you can make sure your body gets the nutrients it needs, you will understand how to be in good health.
Understanding why each of these four critical substances are critical to proper functioning of your body, will help you understand why following diet programs that exclude any of these essential nutrients is, plainly put, ignorant. To deprive our bodies of any of these nutrients, in the proper levels and at the proper times, eventually leads to a worst-case health scenario called death.
Water – Your body is two-thirds water. Water is an ultra essential element and it is involved in every important function your body undertakes during your life. Water brings nutrients to your cells and transports waste from those cells and out of your body.
Several critical body functions cannot take place properly without enough water in your system. These are digestion, excretion, absorptive and circulatory functions. Fresh clean water controls and maintains a proper body temperature. Water also facilitates certain water-soluble vitamins to be transferred to your body. In some cases, these are critically needed vitamins. Your body needs at least 8 glasses (8 ounce each) per day to meet the water needs of your body.
Carbohydrates – Your body gets the energy it needs from one thing, from one type of nutrient, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates come almost totally from plant foods. They are in fruits, vegetables, beans and peas. The only carbohydrates that humans get from non-plant foods are those that come from milk or milk products.
Research scientists have placed carbohydrates into two groups; simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are simple sugars. Simple sugars are fruit sugars (fructose), table sugar (sucrose) and milk sugars (lactose). Fresh fruits are the best source of simple natural sugars for your body.
Complex carbohydrates are also made of sugars but the sugar molecules link together in long chain like structures we call fiber and starch. The best source for complex carbohydrates is peas, beans, fresh vegetables and whole grains.
Carbohydrates are our bodies’ main food and the only source of energy that works for our brain and production of red blood cells. Can you imagine the consequences of a no-carbohydrate diet that someone follows for too long?
A basic rule of thumb, which is important to remember when purchasing food, is that the best source of carbohydrates for your diet is to buy as many unrefined, unprocessed foods as possible. Refined sugar is now thought of as toxic so the more natural sugars and carbohydrates you get for your body, the healthier you will be.
