Marking a first for both Sundance and cyberspace, these viewers were avatars watching a feature-length festival film Monday from a screening room in the virtual world of Second Life.

In the pristine alpine world of Park City, Utah, host of the annual Sundance Film Festival, Director Lynn Hershman Leeson screened her film Strange Culture and held a Q&A hosted by the Stanford Humanities Lab in the virtual online world Second Life, yesterday, a couple of days after the film had its Sundance premier.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Telstra and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School have all established an online presence in Second Life. How can these businesses succeed in Second Life and what can they offer when competing against virtual real estate tycoons, virtual escort services and virtual casinos?

We're on a Second Life kick this week, here at the Daily Galaxy. This new virtual world is making an impact at the Sundance Film Festival and the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, merging the online and "realworld" like a collapsed event horizon. Major global corporations are buying real estate "islands" in this digital universe.

Sundance comes to Second Life

The Sundance Film Festival is coming a bit closer to home next year, when it lands in the virtual world of Second Life. Ok, that might not be quite what you were hoping for, but Sundance is hoping to mimic the film fest experience by creating a virtual festival where folks can view films, and get into the vibe with other online attendees. I'm not too keen on trying out Second Life myself, but how well will the experience translate? Anyway, the opening film will be none other than Four Eyed Monsters, the recent Sundance Channel award winner.
