The internet was invented by American engineers in the 1970's; it has since spread across the globe but because of its very nature there is not central control point.
Despite this fact, over the last couple of decades, a large percentage of the internet's traffic has flowed through the US. This has given the US a strategic advantage primarily in the area of intelligence. But as the world becomes more interconnected, more of the internet traffic is being routed to bypass the US, which raise some concerns for the US government...
