One solutions that I have come up with is to opt for a higher deductible, this will bring down the monthly payment, but allow the patient to see doctors in the network and still get the discounted rate.

The other tip is when visiting speciality doctors outside of the network, it may save you more money to negotiate cash with these doctors than try and use your insurance to go towards the deductible. Many of these doctors are also more willing to give you a better price if they do not have to go through insurance. You may be surprised at how much doctors are willing to negotiate prices these days.
