Ubuntu Linux vs Windows Vista: The Desktop Battle

Mon, 2007-12-03 10:42 - Topics:

It may be a brave opinion but I predict that Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista are going to be the two operating systems that will take over the largest chunk of the desktop OS market during the next couple of years. This comparison is based on my experience with both systems during the last couple of weeks on two different computers.

Changing Default Drive

Hey all!
I have a Dell Laptop triple-booting XP, Vista, and Ubuntu 6.06. Anyway, I have a shared partition that I use for saving files for all three. Is there a way for me to change the default place to save in Vista to that drive instead of the "My Documents" that is on the Vista partition? Thanks in advance.

Not quite the final version of the software just yet but its another release. For those who use Mandriva it add's more support for hardware etc. All my stuff works atm so ill await the final version no longer in testing.... For those who use other distros of linux Mandriva is quite good for record, which I prefer over Ubuntu.

Vista bootloader

Hi

I was using the grub bootloader for my triple boot vista / xp /ubuntu system. It is possible to adjust the grub bootloader to provide it with an image (for a graphical background while showing the bootloader).
But the problem with grub is that you cant choose xp or vista directly from the grub bootloader, it goes to the vista bootloader to let you choose between vista or xp.

Now I found a solution to use the Vista bootloader for all 3 OS to directly boot from (which saves me a hit on the enter key smile.gif). This is working great and I'm currently still using the Vista bootloader.

Deleting "Boot" and "bootmgr"

Apologies in advance for the lengthy post.

I started out with one partition, c:, with XP Pro SP2. Then I created a new partition, onto which I installed Vista Ultimate. This installed the bootloader onto the active partition (c:). I also wanted to install linux, so I created an extended partition with two logical partitions on it, one for root and one for the swap file, onto which I installed Ubuntu 6.10. This installed Grub into the MBR. So I had Grub loading either Ubuntu or the Windows Vista bootloader, which in turn loaded XP or Vista.

I was not happy with this arrangement, so I deleted the partitions onto which Ubuntu and Vista had been installed, created a small partition at the beginning of the drive (before the XP partition), and followed the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=260772, which worked beautifully.
