After several months of speculation, ICANN have awarded Russia the first non-latin domain extension; .РФ (.RF). This will be available from next July according to Kommersant, the Russian newspaper.

Is this a good thing? Well there has been an unusually strong push for a “Russian” domain extension in Russia recently. Even Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation threw his weight behind the campaign.

Russia's battered stock exchanges resumed trading Tuesday after a one-day suspension, following assurances that a wide range of companies would benefit from a government rescue package.

The RTS index was up 1.7 percent one hour after the opening while the MICEX gained 0.9 percent. Blue chips at the MICEX were mixed. Gas giant Gazprom was 2.6 percent up, Russia's largest oil firm Rosneft was 2.4 percent lower and the country's largest private oil company, Lukoil, moved 2.2 percent higher.

Google’s attempt to acquire Russia’s second most popular search and advertising company called Begun (which has 20% market share) was refused by the Russian federal anti-monopoly service. They said that Google did not provide information requested, including a list of people who have the ability to influence their economic operations, and a list of owners. Is that really grounds for rejecting a purchase? You would think that if Google really wanted to purchase this company, that information would have been pretty easy to find.

There's an irony in the fact that when Belgium laid out the month's "Programme of Work" at the U.N. Security Council, this last week was absent an agenda. Since Russia's invasion of Georgia, the diplomatic community has been rather preoccupied. The United States and Western Europe have flailed about, ultimately unable to check Russia's unabashed aggression. Defying a host of threats from the West, which now include military posturing in Poland, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have invaded a neighboring country with impunity.
