DDR1, DDR2, DDR3: Navigating The RAM Maze

Which DDR Is Which? Here Is A Full Guide To RAM.Many computer enthusiasts know exactly what they want when they go to configure their new system. They've researched and picked out a perfectly matching CPU, motherboard and videocard combination that will meet all their needs. However, when it comes to RAM many users become totally befuddled. They generally know how much RAM they need (1GB is the effective operating minimum these days, 2GB if running Vista or using hungry apps like Photoshop), but they don't have a clue as to what DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3 means.

How new ram effected my Vista experience score

Tue, 2007-04-24 11:04 - Topics:

I had 1GB OCZ DDR PC3200, CAS 2.5
My lowest Vista score was ram, at 4.5

I installed 2GB OCZ DDR PC3200 CAS 2.0 yesterday. (Though running at CAS 2.5)
My ram score went from 4.5 to 5.9.

Now, my lowest base score is my CPU:
AMD 4800+ X2 (running a tiny bit over @ 2.53GHz)
Score: 4.9

All my other scores are 5.8 or 5.9.

Video is Nforce 7800GTX 256MB
Hard drive is dual 250GB SATA2 in Nforce RAID stripe.

I will not be upgrading my CPU, as the absolute fastest socket 939 cpu available is Opteron 185, (2.6GHz)
$300+ for .1-.2 faster cpu is not worth it by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi

I have a Pentium 4 D Processor 3.4Ghz

I was just reading about overclocking and was wondering whether it is worth it?

What are the risks etc?
Im all for speeding up my computer but dont want to damage it.

Is it safe? Shall I do it?

Thanks

Vista loses some of my RAM

My computer is custom built using a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P motherboard, a Intel Core 2 CPU (2.13GHz) and a NVidia GeForce 7600 GT video card. Originally I decided on 2GB of RAM which registered as 2048MB in Vista's System panel. I then decided to double it. One more stick of 1GB registered as 3070MB in the System panel and the next 1GB raised the RAM to 3326MB in the System panel. Yes, an increase of only 256MB!!! The BIOS screen shows that I have 4193216K of RAM alright but Vista is only registering 3326MB. I have checked the memory modules and they are all identical. I have tried using only three with different combinations in different slots to try and prove one faulty.

When Installing Vista half way thru I get BSOD...

Well I'm installing Vista Ultimate on my Gateway laptop, and while installing after what seemed to be more than halfway, it said it had to restart which is fine, but upon restart I get the BSOD and it says something to the effect that "Bios is not fully atapi(not exact spelling) compliant."

I'm really not sure what the deal with that is, I ran the compatibility test prior and besides only having 512mb of ram I had no other issue. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Vista not recognizing correct amount of RAM?

Hey all. Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I have a VNF4 Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard, and there's 4 slots for RAM. I had 2 slots filled with 512 sticks for a total of one gig of RAM. So I got another...

Why 4GB RAM only appears as 3GB in Vista

Fri, 2007-03-30 05:49 - Topics:

I got a new PC and it displays my 4gb ram as 3gb and apparently a lot of people have been having this problem and I want everyone to share their views on this.

Basically when I enquired most people said that the Intel core 2 duo chip sets don't have the correct driver to recognise the 4gb ram in your system but they will be bringing it out soon. I asked if my 1gb of non-recognisable ram was being used but the engineers said that it was being used for kernel addresses (or addressing i cant remeber) so it was actually being used by my graphics card etc, so once I run vista, 1gb is being used by kernel addresses, about 1gb is being used by vista and i only have 2gb left sad.gif.

Acpi/4 Gig ram problem

I have an issue that has me puzzled and any help/suggestions would be appreciated. I haven been using Vista Ultimate 32(retail) for awhile now with no issues. I've been thinking about switching over to the 64 bit software so I thought I'd add 2 more gigs of ram to total 4 and thats where the fun has began unsure.gif .
If I try and load my current vista installation with 4 gigs of ram I get a bios non ACPI compliant stop error at bootup 0x000000A5 (0x00001000,0x00000000,0xFFFFFFFF,0x00002040). I have loaded the Vista KB929777 patch (for issues loading windows with 3 gigs of ram or more). If I try & load off the DVD I get the same error after the files are loaded. If I use 3 gigs of ram, no problem. My motherboard also has on board graphics, if I remove my PCI_E card vista will load with no problem with 4 gigs of ram. Could it be an issue with my motherboard, or could my video card be causing the problem? I was also able to borrow 2 sticks of 2gx2 g.skill ram, same problem. I've been looking through the event viewer but haven't been able to find anything. I've been searching around but haven't found anyone with the problem I'm having.
