I've tried a couple of times to defrag my hd, but I'm not sure if anything is happening. Since there is no progress bar or anything that might give the user some indication that something is actually being done, I really don't know what if anything...

Since last night Vista gets as far as the end of the splash screen (with the progress bar and copyright message) and then restarts. The last thing I did was to try and install some HP Printer software which wasn't compatible with Vista - although it took an age during the install before it told me this and promptly crashed so I couldn't exit - once I'd restarted, this problem happened.
Any ideas how to resolve it? I've popped the Vista DVD in and did a "Repair" but it's done no good. Last good configuration didn't work, I can't even get into Safe Mode as it restarts at exactly the same point!
Mine only shows the progress bar thing on the bottom, and it's Vista retail.
I'm finding that the first time I look at my "Computer" folder, everything is shown correctly. However, if I then close the folder and re-open it, only "MTP device" is shown. It doesn't show any of my hard disks, or DVD drives. The green "progress" bar in the folder keeps going, but it never shows any more content, and the green bar never manages to actually complete. All the drives are still working OK and can be access directly (e.g. by opening a folder to "C:\").
Anyone know why this might be?

I've got 3 SATA HDs and 3 IDE HDs and Vista Business/XP installed on a dual-booting partition on one of the SATAs. I'm getting stuck at the Vista screen with the progress bar for 12 minutes before Vista boots. Once it's up, it works fine. Aero and everything. Hunk-Dory.
Now, if I unplug all three IDE drives and leave just the SATA's, it boots in about 1 minute. Plug in one drive, add 4 minutes. The next, add another 4 minutes. And so on, til we have 12.
XP, however, boots in about a minute.
I have:
3 ghz Intel Northwoods
2 gig DDR
All of a sudden Vista is not booting up past the logo screen (with the green animated progress bar). Actually, it goes into blank screen mode after 1-2 minutes and nothing happens ever after that.
Worst yet, even the Vista Ultimate CD (which I used originally to install, twice before) is NOT loading past the same screen (logo)! it first goes through the 'loading windows files...' then boots to the logo screen and nothing happens for several minutes!
I also tried booting in safe mode, it goes through the scrolling of loading files and always gets stuck on crcdisk.sys file
