MySpace Music to name Courtney Holt chief next week

Courtney Holt, an MTV executive, will be named as president of MySpace Music, possibly as early as Monday, according to a source close to the company.

MySpace Music is the digital music service formed by News Corp. and the four largest recording companies. Some observers say that MySpace, with a well-established history of offering music, could emerge as a competitor to Apple's iTunes.

Sure, you can find most of that ancient medium known as the “music video” on YouTube, but having all those great videos from the 80’s, 90’s and early ’00’s in a neat searchable place is handy.

MTV’s Harmonix games studio and The Beatles’ Apple Corps label have confirmed they will develop “a music-making” video game that allows gamers to play some of the band’s songs from its U.K. back-catalog.

The title has no scheduled release date but will be ready by Christmas of next year, the pair told reporters on a conference call. Digital downloads of Beatles’ songs is another matter -- Apple Corps said it is still working on that and has nothing yet to announce.

Viacom’s MTV Networks as well as Apple Corps, a company formed by The Beatles in 1968, will unveil a global music “project” on Thursday, the two companies announced today.

No specific details were given, but the nature and type of announcement hints to a global music store the two companies may have in the works. For MTV it would be the third major initiative to gain some traction in the digital music market after a failed cooperation with Microsoft as well as the Rhapsody America joint venture with Real Networks and Verizon, which also never evolved into a serious business for MTV.
