Update: 115 People Lose Their Jobs At Spot Runner, Weblistic Acquisition Is Washed Out

The layoffs at Spot Runner are a lot worse than we expected. Instead of 50 to 75 people, Spot Runner is cutting much deeper—eliminating 115 jobs. Co-founder and CEO Nick Grouf characterizes this as “under 30 percent” of the company’s total headcount (which he declines to specify, but must be at least 384 people). The majority of these cuts, he tells me, will come from the company’s local-search advertising business, which came out of the acquisition of Weblistic back in March.

Strong health care equals strong emergency response

In previous columns, I've discussed the consequences that will result during a pandemic or bioterrorist attack from not insuring all Americans and providing adequate primary care--see "The Security Impact of the Uninsured" and "The Exodus of General Medical Physicians." What I haven't discussed is that the U.S. health-care system also is arguably less capable of responding to disasters when compared to nationalized health-care systems in other countries.

Depends what you're doing really. I heard it makes jobs easier and has a more user-friendly UI. But theres still the possibility of bugs, which should be eradicated soon by patches etc.

Software

I don't know if this is where this topic should be. I've had 2 closed so far, and guess it was`cos they were where they shouldn't have been - I dunno. Anyway, soon, within a few days, I'm gonna run around all over the city looking for a store that sells a disk-defragging software. Before I do, I wanna make sure I get the best or at least something good - assuming the best is way expensive. I use to have Diskeeper 7.0, but it won't run in Vista. I just d/l the 30-day-free-trial of PerfectDisk, and it seems to have sped up my system, but I have no idea how much it defragged nor what it had even done.

Lifehacker -- Screenshot Tour: Windows Vista's Task Scheduler

One Windows administration tool that got totally tricked out in the upgrade from XP to Vista is the Scheduled Tasks manager. While Vista's Scheduled Tasks manager is a lot more intimidating for the casual user compared to XP's bare bones interface, it does allow for finer control and offer a lot more historical data on the jobs set to run.
