Survival training advised for IT staff

IT professionals need to take control of their own development and training if they are to survive the recession, recruitment experts said today.

Members of a roundtable discussion on skills said IT is better placed than many sectors to weather any coming storms. But they added that employees need to be able to demonstrate their value to the business to ensure they are not the first to go in a cull. As businesses look at cutting training budgets, it is likely to be up to employees to look for opportunities for more training or experience.

Do successful projects possess an evolutionary superiority that somehow advances the overall state of project capability out in the world? Although some observers may believe so, the repetitive nature of IT project failure make me doubt such positions.

I believe that any Computer Science degree can be made a lot more relevant simply by paying more attention to these three points. Had I had more exposure to these things before starting my working life, I believe it would have given me some real world skills that I could have applied straight away, rather than having to scramble to learn everything I needed to know on the job. It would have made me better able to deal with the requirements of my work and would also have made me a better citizen of the IT community.
