Default Sound Device

Looking for some help, have tried to google and search on the M$ site with zero luck. I went from Vista x86 to x64 Home Premium and now unable to have the default device be saved.

Whenever I plug in the USB headphone it becomes the default output device and I'm unable to reset it back to the speakers via the icon in the task bar or via the control panel. In the control panel the apply button is grayed out and as soon as I close the dialog out after reseting the default device to speaker, it is reset to the headphones.

I have Skype so do not want to keep plugging in and out the headphones when I get or have to make calls. Help is much appreciated and I promise to pass it on and provide help on this site to others in need.
