Scientists: Rocks Could Be Used to Capture CO2 : CleanTechnica

Sun, 2008-11-09 17:03 - Topics:

According to researchers at Columbia University, peridotite rocks could be harnessed to capture carbon dioxide in large quantities, potentially offsetting billions of tons of CO2 emissions each year. The rocks, found in Oman, California, New Guinea and elsewhere, produce calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate rock (both solids) upon contact with CO2.

The Public's Dangerous Misunderstanding of Climate Change

Mon, 2008-10-27 14:44 - Topics:

As I report on climate change, I come across a lot of scary facts, like the possibility that thawing permafrost in Siberia could release gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, or the risk that Greenland could pass a tipping point and begin to melt rapidly. But one of the most frightening studies I've read recently had nothing to do with icebergs or megadroughts. In a paper that came out Oct.

Allergies Getting Worse? Blame Global Warming

One of the few potentially positive effects of climate change, at least in the short term, is that increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may enhance the growth of plants. That could be good for agriculture — though warming temperatures and changing rain patterns in a warmer world might wipe out that advantage.

Whether cattle are reared organically or with conventional farming methods, the end effect is bad for the environment, according to a new German consumer report. The agricultural lobby, however, is preventing politicians from tackling this massive source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Arctic Breakup Growing Each Week

Mon, 2008-08-25 14:37 - Topics:

Fears about the Arctic melting away during northern summers are proving to be far from unfounded, with the latest reports rolling in from Alaska and Greenland showing disturbing trends. New shipping lanes are opening up through what were once icy seas near Alaska, and glaciers that have so far withstood much of what the environment has thrown at them in Greenland, are showing signs of breaking… literally.

Kites Could Become Major Source Of Wind Power

The idea to use kites for wind power is nothing new, but a development at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands reminds us that we haven’t even begun to tap the potential of these flying contraptions.

Passive Solar Home Plans

What are the best passive solar home plans? With the price of non-renewable, "easy" energy from sources such as coal and oil soaring, the environment suffering from our addiction to these energy sources, and an uncertain future for our planet Earth, it is important that we all start doing our bit to help the world in which we live.
