The x86 / x64 Confusion!

Tue, 2007-02-06 21:03 - Topics:

Hi there,
I have sifted my way through plenty of web sites looking for advice as to whether I should upgrade to a 32-bit version of Vista or 64-bit.
I have redeemed my voucher for Vista Business which should be arriving soon, however, I am still in the grey as to which version to install.

Since I have a modern laptop that has an x64 architecture (Core 2 Duo T7200), I would think the 64-bit is the one for me.
But I am however aware that I must gather all the drivers for my hardware that support 64-bit. Which hardware does this specifically mean?

I have also heard a lot of rumours that many applications will fail to run on Vista x64 - but I thought and still am sure that is has backwards compatability with 32-bit apps. Is this true?

ACPI Compatability Issue

Sat, 2007-02-03 13:24 - Topics:

I have run the Vista Upgrade Advisor and it passed with the exception of a few older software issues. When I try to install Vista Home Premier the first screen I get is that my machine has an ACPI Compatability issue and can't install until fixed. I have the latest bios and when I check the bios it shows ACPI enabled. The device manage shows the computer is "Standard", not ACPI. I did have to replace one of the memory chips awhile ago. Here is my system:

AMD Athlon XP2400+
2GB Ram
160GB HD
Windows XP - Service Pack 2 (with all critical updates)
ATI RADEON 9550 Video card.
