Vista Install

It looks like other people are having this sort of problem... any help would be greatly appreciated... Here's the story.
So I'm trying to see how well my current rig will run Vista and decided to test it out on a spare HDD. I yanked all the power to my drives and plugged in an old school IBM 40gb 7200rpm drive.
Everything was going fine (I made Vista format the drive) until I got to what looks to be the last step of the install - where it reboots. It locked up! I'm not sure what happened, but the scrolling green bar just froze .
I thought it was maybe the HDD, so I swapped it out with a Seagate 80gb 7200rpm drive. Same thing! What gives?
